Featuring Scott "Wino" Weinrich, founder of DC legends THE OBSESSED on vocals, this highly influential doom-metal group was essential in influencing todays current crop of stoner-rock groups. While the impact SAINT VITUS made with "born too late" at the time was minimal, the legacy of that early dedication has influenced and changed the world of music. DOOM-METAL/ROCK. Thoroughly ignored outside the deepest heavy metal underground throughout their long career, SAINT VITUS only later received some recognition for their crucial influence over the late-'90s/early-2000s doom/stoner-metal scene. In fact, it could be argued that SAINT VITUS followers such as SLEEP and ELECTRIC WIZARD pretty much learned all their lessons from "heavier than thou" - a 14-track collection of SAINT VITUS' glory years with SST Records. Starting with the band's magnum opus, "born too late" (which is wisely included almost in its entirety), and working its way back toward their eponymous Scott Reagers-fronted debut, the listener is given a reverse look at the band's evolution from lo-fi BLACK SABBATH enthusiasts to a pile-driving riff machine behind ex-THE OBSESSED vocalist Scott "Wino" Weinrich.

DOOM-METAL/ROCK. "mournful cries" was SAINT VITUS' 2nd album with singer Scott "Wino" Weinrich and, like "born too late", it confirmed he was the ideal vocalist for the band. The gritty resignation and throaty, fevered force of his voice meshes perfectly with Dave Chandler's howl-in-a-void guitar work. Weinrich's 2nd guitar also gives Chandler more space to stretch out with his thick, buzzing chords, as Armando Acosta's carefully punctuated drumming hits like a fist in the gut and Mark Adams' bass gives the songs a simple but rock-solid foundation. If you are unfamiliar with SAINT VITUS, they are considered the godfathers of the whole doom-metal genre.
SOFY MAJOR - s/t (2009/EMERGENCE) LP 10,50 €
POST-HARDCORE. The latest from French post-hardcore act SOFY MAJOR is this excellent one-sided LP (with screenprinted artwork on the other). Yet another promising act that delves into the noisier realms of post-hardcore with loads of caustic guitar textures and clashing chord phrasings, harsh vocal screams, and a solid rhythmic core that drives the bulk of the songwriting. This is another great release from a curious group that's getting better and better. They've always been deserving of more appreciation, but now more than ever... Beautiful screen-printed gatefold too.
STELLARDRIVE / SCOLD FOR WANDERING - split (2009/EMERGENCE) LP 9,50 €
POST-HARDCORE/SCREAMO-HARDCORE. STELLARDRIVE (ex-GANTZ) plays some nice and intense post-rock with a hint of hardcore in the vein of nowadays CULT OF LUNA, MOGWAI, ISIS etc.. Dark and stirring but still soaring, concise and cheery. On the flipside SCOLD FOR WANDERING plays traditional and typical French screamo-hardcore with some post-rock hints, and epic influences in the vein of DAITRO, MHAI EDRISH. Melodic but still heavy.
THRASHINGTON D.C. / PATRONS, THE - split (2009/EMERGENCE) 7" 4,- €
HARDCORE/GARAGE-PUNK. Both french bands contribute 2 new smasher to this split. THRASHINGTON D.C. on the a-side are still into fast and thrashy hardcore in the vein of end' 90s bandana-thrash stuff from 625 Records. THE PATRONS on the flipside deserve some kind of gnarly punk-ruck with a nice taste of garage-rock.

HARDCORE. With the highly anticipated follow-up to 2004's "retroactive abortion", VENOMOUS CONCEPT are looking forward to spit their sonic and lyrical venom straight into-your-face. "poisoned apple" is an intense, fast and angry release that combines grindcore, hardcore and punk. The songs are straightforward and relentless, packed with aggression. They are also very short, with most of the 17 tracks clocking in at less than 2min.. Definitely not your typical Deranged release but it is a great pleasure to be releasing ONE HUNDRED DOLLAR's 2nd installment in their regional 7" series. "my father's house" continues in the same vein folk, country and psychedellic as their highly praised "forest of tears" album from 2008.

HARD-ROCK. You may like classic-rock...the MOS GENERATOR frontman's new project, the 2 man STONE AXE, deserve an essentially 10 track lesson in rock. Highlights? The whole album...you like CREAM, FREE, THIN LIZZY, THE FACES, ACV/DC and DEEP PURPLE? Well, I bet you don't like them nearly as much as STONE AXE. Still, that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the hell out of this impressive debut. Highly recommended.
